Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Modigliani aficionados, We are delighted to announce the launch of The Modigliani Initiative, an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and documenting the life of the artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920). Our mission is to become a centralized and publicly accessible resource for fact-based information about Modigliani, his paintings, and his artistic milieu. The core values that inspire our mission are in-depth and meticulous research, collaboration, and fostering continuity of scholarship to ensure Modigliani’s legacy for posterity. With the exception of four landscapes that he completed in 1918–19 while living in the south of France, Modigliani exclusively painted people. His subjects can at times be identified and included his friends and fellow artists, art dealers, lovers and dalliances, paid models, and collectors who commissioned him to paint their likenesses. All of these individuals have their own stories, some known but the majority forgotten. The Modigliani Initiative seeks to uncover these accounts which can enrich the provenance of the works and, at the same time, contribute to the scholarship on the artist.
